Eva Helene Pade is an academically trained Danish painter who moved to Paris in 2023. Her paintings, which depict crowds of nude women in a sort of collective ecstasy, are often very nearly life-size and have begun to fetch well into six digits—with a recent painting selling at Christie’s Hong Kong for nearly $130,000.

Three new works, Jagt, Nærmere, and Opstand, are debuting at The European Art Foundation (TEFAF) at the Park Avenue Armory this weekend, during an 80-degree New York art week.

In a recent Frieze review of Forårsofret at ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art, Sofia Hallström describes Pade’s recasting of sacrifice as something closer to resistance, with femininity and violence no longer arranged as victim and force but as unstable, entangled conditions. The exhibition’s connection to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, and to Pina Bausch’s 1975 reinterpretation, matters because Pade is less interested in illustrating dance than in borrowing its structure: repetition, exhaustion, proximity, release.

Ropac’s presentation of Søgelys in London extended that language into a more spatial register, suspending paintings on metal posts so viewers moved around them as if inside a crowd. The gallery text emphasizes Pade’s interest in the “commotion of the ensemble,” where a figure can lose distinction, become a gesture, or turn into smoke.
