Radio Shoestring was a short-lived pirate station calling itself “Eastside Community Radio,” broadcasting from Walthamstow in East London beginning in March 1984. The 12 May broadcast captures its informal mixture of independent music, homemade jingles, local announcements, and unpolished DJ conversation. Unlike licensed stations, it was assembled cheaply and transmitted without official permission, giving local broadcasters direct access to the airwaves. It is especially interesting because it preserves the sound of London’s dense early-1980s pirate-radio culture just before new legislation forced Radio Shoestring and several other stations to close.
